Size: 8.5in x 7in/21.5m x 18.5cmWilliam Palgrave served as a missionary in Syria during the years 1853 to 1861 when he was being forced out of the country because of the Druze persecution of the Maronite Christians. He returned to Syria in 1862 and undertook an adventurous 13-month journey across Central Arabia disguised as a Syrian doctor and merchant. He was given support by the French government to investigate how far missionary enterprise was possible in Arabia. He was also supported by businessmen who were interested in establishing contacts for importing cotton and horses.
