This newspaper has 2 inside pages with black bordered columns and long reports on the ASSASSINATION of PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN . This issue also has the FAREWELL ORDER signed in type by Confederate General ROBERT E LEE , published after his surrender to General Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia- ending the Civil War. This lot also inclues an incomplete issue of the same newspaper title containing the April 15, 1865 issue with pages 3 and 4 only. Both pages are black bordered and have MUCH "breaking news" of the ASSASSINATION of ABRAHAM LINCOLN by John Wilkes Booth. United States President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865, as the American Civil War was drawing to a close, just five days after the surrender of the commanding general of the Confederate army, Robert E. Lee , and his battered Army of Northern Virginia to General Ulysses S. Grant 's Union forces. Lincoln was shot while watching a play at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C., and died the next morning. The murder of the President was planned and carried out by well-known actor John Wilkes Booth as part of a larger conspiracy intended to rally the remaining Confederate troops to continue fighting. Lincoln was attending a performance of Our American Cousin with his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln , Major Henry R. Rathbone, and Rathbone's fiancee, Clara Harris. Lincoln was the first American president to be assassinated, though an unsuccessful attempt to assassinate Andrew Jackson had been made in 1835. Booth, Lincoln's assassin , had plotted with fellow conspirators Lewis Powell and George Atzerodt to kill Secretary of State William H. Seward and Vice President Andrew Johnson . Although Booth succeeded in killing Lincoln, the rest of the plot failed. Powell attacked Seward, but only wounded him. Atzerodt, Johnson's would-be assassin, lost his nerve and fled from Washington, D.C. . Confederate General Robert E. Lee issued his Farewell Address to his Army of Northern Virginia on April 10, 1865, the day after he surrendered the army to Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant . Lee's surrender was instrumental in bringing about the end of the American Civil War . The text of the order as issued was as follows: Headquarters, Army of Northern Virginia, 10th April 1865.After four years of arduous service marked by unsurpassed courage and fortitude, the Army of Northern Virginia has been compelled to yield to overwhelming numbers and resources. I need not tell the survivors of so many hard fought battles, who have remained steadfast to the last, that I have consented to the result from no distrust of them. But feeling that valour and devotion could accomplish nothing that could compensate for the loss that must have attended the continuance of the contest, I have determined to avoid the useless sacrifice of those whose past services have endeared them to their countrymen. By the terms of the agreement, officers and men can return to their homes and remain until exchanged. You will take with you the satisfaction that proceeds from the consciousness of duty faithfully performed, and I earnestly pray that a merciful God will extend to you his blessing and protection. With an unceasing admiration of your constancy and devotion to your Country, and a grateful remembrance of your kind and generous consideration for myself, I bid you an affectionate farewell. – R. E.
