Antique Letters - Warren, Ohio Lot of (26) handwritten letters, 1867-1877, sent between Martha M. Ferguson of Warren, OH and her brothers, James R. and Charles L. Brown. Most of the letters, (20), were written by Martha. Warren appears to have been an exciting town. She writes of fires, a destructive cyclone, bank failure, corrupt officials, a suicide, body found floating in the river, lightening, many deaths, many names. Appx. 45pp. total on 5" x 8" paper. Majority of letters, 1870s; one each 1867, 1868. Penned in a small, but readable hand. Some a little light. With (13) envelopes, most w/ stamps - all but one sent to Gustavus, Ohio. Note: It's not known if the all the envelopes match w/ letters. Excerpts: May 3, 1872 - "Warren has had another fire. This morning little after 3 o'clock t was a freight train came along & discovered Packards & Reeds Machine shop and foundry on fire..." April 24, 1878 - "We are safe from the cyclone of yesterday...The school house, livery stable, Christianas house all are more or less injured..."; "The trees in front of Iddings were blown, t is one left..."; "..almost every person was out to see the ruins." March 1, 1868 [Sent to brothers in Highland Gulch, Montana Territory - plus cover to this locale, but dated Jan 1868.] - "You have toiled and worked hard...and if you are not successful you cant help it. Health is more than gold...Don't buy any more claims that you will have to stay t longer than fall." Jan. 26, 1876 [Bank failure of Thomas McLain] - "No pen can describe the consternation on our streets, everybody was out."; "All the school teachers money and all the poor people...had deposited with him over one hundred thousand."; "I believe this town will sink from pure rascality."Plus, (6) letters by brother C[harles] L. Brown, 1874-1877. 12pp., total, most 5" x 8". Two on letterhead: Morris House, Troy, Ohio; and Spencer House, Indianapolis. Other letters sent from Dayton, Sullivan, etc. No mining content or covers.(26) letters; (13) covers total. Warren, Ohio Names Mentioned Uncle Hoyt, Charlie Willson, Loll, Mr. Spears, Jonathan Folsom, Mrs. Belden, Spears (family of 15 - lost house in fire), Mrs. Oliver Brooks (killed by lightning), Morriss Iddings (broke neck), Mrs. David Gilmore, more.
