A hardcover book of great interest but in poor condition and SOLD AS IS . Entitled Journal of a Voyage to New York, and a Tour in Several of the American Colonies, in 1679-80. Pub. Long Island Historical Society, Brooklyn, 1867. Memoirs of the Long Island Historical Society, Volume I. Translated from the original manuscript in Dutch and edited by Henry C. Murphy, Foreign Corresponding Secretary of the Society. First Edition. viii, xlvii, 440pp, 13 plates (some colored and folding) at end, index. Sections include: Voyage to New York, New York and its Vicinity, Journey to the Delaware, The Hudson and its Affluents, Boston and the Voyage Home.An account of the journey to New York of two members of the Labadist group of mystics from Wiewerd, Netherlands to scout out an appropriate place in the New World to start a colony. Founded by Jean de Labadie (1610- ), the Labadists eventually founded a colony called Bohemia Manor in Maryland but died out both in America and Holland early in the 18th century. The Editor-Translator, Henry C. Murphy (1810-1882), a lawyer, politician and scholar of Brooklyn, acquired this manuscript while serving as American Minister to the Netherlands in the 1850s. He gives a detailed account of the rise and fall of the Labadists in his 38-page Introduction. Murphy himself was probably one of Brooklyn's all-time
