Desiderius Erasmus The Prose Tales of Edgar Allen Poe in two volumes - 1867 - W.J. Widdleton, Publisher, New York - (2) 7 1/2 x 5 1/4 inch volumes labeled "First Series" and "Second Series". First volume is 483 pages and the second volume is 498 pages. Maroon boards gold gilt lettering including Poe's signature in facsimile on the front boards. Assued. Title page dated 1867.FREE PRIORITY SHIPPING. A nice set of Poe's complete prose. I identify all First Editions using the Spoon River First Editions : A Guide To Identifications. A great book. "Immanuel Kant's categorical imperative should have been "Be born Rich." Kilgore Trout The condition of the books are in VERY GOOD condition. Tight bindings with no loose pages. Clean, mostly white inner pages with NO markings. The title page and inside pages on volume one are white. See below on volume two pages.The gold gilt lettering on the spines and covers are crisp and bright. Flaws: Both volumes show obvious spine chipping as well as minor chipping along the top edge of the spines. Volume two shows a light stain on the title page (shown in scan). Pages 457 to 498 in volume two show light browing. The back board to volume two also shows light wear. (See scans).Both volumes have a previous owner's name penned on the page before the title page. These are approx. 2 x 1 inch areas. My grading terms are : MINT ; Like it came off the factory press. I rarely use this term to describe an item. FINE; A clean copy with no spine creases and only minor wear or dust jacket rubbing, etc. A tight, square binding and white pages. VERY GOOD; A general read copy but still clean. Can show light spine creases, light dust jacket creases or tiny nicks along the edges, normal shelf wear, etc. GOOD; Obvious used copy with visible spine reading creases, cover, visible cover rubbing or light corner folds or bumped spine areas. Clean inside pages but possible browning, etc. FAIR; Still in tact and readable but obvious flaws, edge tears, etc. POOR; You just want to read the book. Loose pages, major rips, creasing, serious spine roll, etc. BOARDS are the actual material of the outer cover BUMPED is when the boards get a tiny indentation Yellowing or Browning is when the acid in the paper causes discoloring of the inner pages - Chip is a small piece missing from the edge of the dust jacket - Crease is a bend in the paper or DJ but not to w the paper was physically folded. But a crease can be seen - Dampstain is a light stain resulting from water or other liquid damage - End Papers are the sheets of paper pasted onto the inner covers, joining the book block to the covers. FFEP stands for front free-endpaper. This is the first page of any book; usually blank. Foxing is the term used for the rust colored spots which are from oxidation of both organic and iron impurities left behind during the paper making process. " Go to Hell, I'm reading."
