55 Total Letters - Old West Handwritten Minnesota Family Letters - Correspondence Archive. All to: Amanda Hauston [Houston ?] Souther. Maine. Most From: Nancy May Souther & Preston Souther & other family members. Cities: Most from Hector & Carver Minnesota, few from Crooked Lake Camp, Burnard - Minneapolis - Ornville, Houston & Glencoe Minnesota. 1868 - 1894 - [5] Unknown locations. Also included is a 1873 long shopping list - 3 calling cards [two of them have the Souther name]- 1 handwritten poem, written by a doctor. Letters mention in part: Moses started out to travel to see the country - Preston trashing machine - Farming & farm animals - Married 12 years and in that time will have 7 children - Wind blows all the time - Fields full of Crocus flowers - Hired girl - Green corn, take all the husks off except the last round tie ends over the top and pack in keg with brine ..... - Your remarriage - Farm worker, I have to sleep in the barn with the horses and colts, nice room, good bed, good fire, go to the house to get my meals, the mens told me t was 200 cattle and horses and 93 [?] windmills to pump the water for the cattle and horses & hand pumps - Stoped at Aunts when we went up on the prairie - Grain prices - Prestons steam trasher - Preston brought a little girl from the prairies - Made soap, boil longer and put salt in it, some ashes, lye over grease, but enough lye on to eat up ...........,strong enough to bare up a egg, boil ....... - comes the night train - Way they do lazy folks out , they take the children all that are not able to work and put them out with anyone that will take them, let the rest go hungry or work, just as they please - Driving 6 oxen - & Much More.
