Nice 1868 US TWO CENT (2c) PIECE - VERY Attractive Coin! Natural, Original Color & Contact Marks From Circulation, Mostly on Obverse. Signs of Cracked Die on Bottom of Reverse. BETTER DATE with FULL WE By 1868 the 2 cent Denomination Mintage had fallen sharply and in 4 short years they were phased out in favor of the 5 cent Nickel. (see pic's) Pictured Coin Being Auctioned. The Series : Was the first series of US coinage to have the motto "In God We Trust" struck on it. Our President, Abraham Lincoln, Approved this change made to American coinage as The American Civil War raged. Even to this day, we have Abraham Lincoln to thank for "In God We Trust" being added to US coinage. This series, and Obsolete Denomination, was the first US coin to ever include our motto! Did you ever notice that all the Seated Silver coin variations "WITH" motto all come after this year? The short lived 2 cent denomination was minted for only ten years, from 1864-1873, All at the Philadelphia Mint. As the years went on, it was the 5c nickel became the smaller denomination coin of choice, ending this short lived series.
