These spectacular goblets were made by brothers Daniel John Houle and Charles Houle (maker's mark "DHCH") in London (leopard's head), 1869 (date letter "o"). Rising from a stepped, fluted foot of alternating silver and silver gilt to an imposing baluster stem with fluted collar, each silver gilt goblet has a slightly flared, rolled rim. Encircling the upper portion of each vessel is an applied openwork silver frieze depicting scenes of Herucles battling the Centaurs, drawn from Classical Greek mythology. The friezes bear the maker's mark, the lion passant (sterling), and the duty mark of Queen Victoria; the goblets have all of the aforementioned marks. A truly stunning pair, these goblets are offered by Chancery Lane Antiques for $4000.
