This is an 1869 letter and envelope (with postage stamp) concerning a post American Civil War (1861-1865) society. The letter is to Judge G.G. Dwight of New York (former Brig. General in the Union Army) from Robert Walls (or Watts ). The letter deals with an organization called “The Society of the Army and Navy.” It refers to the election of the society’s first officers (which includes Admiral Farragut – President, and Lt. Gen. Sheridan - Vice President). The list of officers in the Society include many Civil War military officers. The letter is from the attic of an old house in New York.
