1869 WHALING SHIP EUROPA OF EDGARTOWN, OAHU PRISON RE ARREST, HONOLULU, 2 DOCUMENTS. Being offered are two documents relating to the whaleship Europa of Edgartown, MA, which left August 29, 1866, under the command of Capt. Thomas Mellen on a whaling voyage to the North Pacific, returning home August 17, 1872. This was a very successful voyage: 1,556 barrels of sperm oil, 3,100 barrels of whale oil, and 39,293 pounds of whale bone (baleen). Document #1 -- November 27, 1869 “Ship Europa” To Oahu Prison for For arrest -- Frank Abbot 3.00 For 1 day _____ 1.00 Paid 4.00 [signed illeg.] Document #2 -- Honolulu, Nov. 26, 1869 Rec. from Capt. Mellen of Europa the sum of One Hundred Dollars being my advance as Steward of Ship Europa (signed illeg.) In case Isaac Gurdon [sp?] quits to go to sea in the Europa I promise to refund the amount of his advance to Capt. Mellen upon demand.
