Presented for sale is an exquisite carved ivory easel back picture frame. This frame was made in China between 1850 - 1900 for export to the western market. The front of the frame is beautifully carved with a floral motif. The carving is very fine and quite deeply done.
The easel back consists of a carved piece of ivory attached with a metal hinge. The picture is held in place with four metal tabs which swivel on metal posts. T is a round finial with a sterling silver ring at the top of the frame so that the frame may also be hung on a wall.
The frame is in excellent condition. Everything seems to be entirely original. The metal tabs on the back are tight and secure. The hinge mechanism that attaches the easel to the frame works well. T is some natural shrinkage of the ivory on either side of the interior oval which has resulted in some minor cracking. T are also some very minor chips on the front of the frame consistent with age and light use. However, these are hardly noticeable and do not detract in any way from the exceptional appearance of this piece. Otherwise, t are no problems of any kind.
The frame is 3 7/8 inches tall and 3 3/8 wide.
