C.1870 Marked Solomon Bell Redware Flower Pot Stamped Solomon Bell, this red earthenware bodied flowerpot washed with a thin white slip and decorated with broadly brushed designs of manganese colored lead glaze is typical of the utilitarian pottery produced in Strasburg, Virginia in the decades after the Civil War, Measuring 7" tall and 5 3/4" diameter at the top, it has a few typical blemishes, but appears to be in very good, sound condition with no cracks or hairlines. As can be seen in the photos there are two areas of minor shallow roughness on the top of the lip and a kiln scar at the base (that's the little pinkish chess pawn shape} where a bit of clay was used to join wares stacked in the kiln to keep them from falling. Notice, too, the faint tannish rounded shapes in the whitish slip at the base of the pot that show where the potter's fingers grasped the pot from the bottom. This is also commonly seen on glazed redware pots which were held by the bottom when dipped in the liquid glaze, and I always enjoy placing my fingers over the last remaining earthly traces of that long ago potter. The S in the stamped mark is very faint making it look like: OLOMON BELL. I acquired this pot 37 years ago when I curated an exhibition called Regional Aspects of American Folk Pottery at the Historical Society of York County in Pennsylvania. It was in the exhibition but not in the catalogue. Well I don't know what I have done to make the typeface so small, ( it doesn't necessarily mean that I'm indicating I am modest about my past accomplishments) but it does mean I'm too damned tired and perplexed to change it. Estimate: $100-300 NO RESERVE
