Classic Maine antique handmade, potter wheel thrown stoneware clay salt glazed oyster jar in the scarce larger quart size (actually holds 5 cups! ) with blue highlighted stamped "ALFRED JONES SONS. BANGOR MAINE" vendor's name at the top front shoulder, traditional finger handle at the rear, attractive, original & notably old top cork and retaining it's original old surface, as found. This was in the kitchen of the main house, displayed on a shelf. It had been t a very long time after being put away clean decades ago. It has just sat on that shelf since the 1950's. Seventy years before that it was still used to carry oysters to the farm to âe¦make oyster stew. The Alfred Jones Sons firm was one of the most prominent vendors in the region close to the farm. The scarce 5 cup larger size is consistent with the scale of this firm's regional business. Larger than the traditional pint oyster jars, the size feature makes this jar more difficult to find. That's a lot of oysters to bring home to a rural farm in a wagon. More than likely this jar, unlike the pint jar we recently sold, was a single trip home and never saw usage again. These jars were returnable a refillable in practice; brought back and for the to the vendor or local country store. The lip chip on this jar probably did not happen at this farm but came to the farm that way from an earlier user's pry-the-cork-out opening. These early oyster jars are particularly attractive to Maine stoneware collectors. They are a singular-to-Maine stoneware form; highly distinctive in their shape, glaze and vendor marks: They are only found in Maine looking like this. They are varied by the vendor name with large cities like Portland and Bangor having larger size jars and prominent vendor marks but many small communities have obscure and very rare local stamped marks on smaller country store jars. These odd vendor marks keeps collector's hunting as do the various scarce sizes. This oyster jar's vendor's mark is considered common but the jar size, at 5 cups, is scarce. Along with the Maine collector's enthusiasm is a strong group of "I JUST LIKE THEM I WANT ONE THEY ARE SOOOOO CUTE AND SOOOO MAINE " broad collector appeal that keeps the market for themâe¦ very steady. They are just as adorable as this one appears to be. Very good as found condition. T is an old 1" square upper top rim edge chip at 3:00, a single 1/8" outer upper rim edge flake at 9:30 and an early 2 inch stress hair line crack at the lip edge extending down onto the shoulder at 9:00. These are all old usage related damage from the cork. Again we note that the original cork is particularly attractive. On the rear of the body, to the lower right of the handle bottom, is a common in-the-making "glaze pop", so called as it is w an impurity in the clay body exploded in the kiln firing leaving, in this case, a small center hole with a circular check surrounding it. This is under the original salt glaze, stable and, again, in-the-making. Otherwise t is no damage and the attractive sized jar is in very pleasing original condition, as found. Right out of the kitchen the oyster jar has appropriate & light surface usage toning and lightest soiling for it's age and from it's old farm residence. Please see photographs.
