1871 FINE BINDING LEATHER 10 VOLUMES FIELDING TOM JONES Description: Henry Fielding (22 April 1707 – 8 October 1754) was an English novelist and dramatist known for his rich earthy humour and satirical prowess, and as the author of the novel Tom Jones. Aside from his literary achievements, he has a significant place in the history of law-enforcement, having founded (with his half-brother John) what some have called London's first police force, the Bow Street Runners, using his authority as a magistrate.ON AUCTION is a formidable 1871 10-Volume set, in very fine quality leather, The Works of Henry Fielding, Esq. In 10 volumes, published by Little, Brown and Co., Boston, but printed in the UK. A British set. The fine leather binding is also British, we think, fine blue leather with marbled boards, matching marbled page block and endpapers and pastedowns. Five raised bands on the spine, fine gilt hand tooling. The binder is not identified, but it was a major UK bindery. Over 5000 pages in the set, with Vol. 1 sporting a frontispiece print of Fielding. With the bookplates of Howard Shreve Fisher.9x6 inches, hinges all appear to be holding well. A very handsome set.
