's a scarce old Patent 1871 Hayward's Fire Extinguisher Hand Grenade Bottle in perfect original condition and contents. Base embossed with the number 2. The bottle still retains the original seal which is airtight and not leaking at all. A-1 Mint condition. T is a hairstraw in the neck shown in picture. This is in the mold and is NOT a crack .T are no chips anyw, no cracks, or unattractive scratches. It has a hand applied tooled top. It stands 6" tall, and measures 4 ¼" in diameter. T is embossing . One side reads, S.F. Hayward, 407 Broadway, N.Y., another reads, Patented Aug. 8, 1871, and the other reads, Hayward Hand Fire Grenade. These interesting old bottles originally were filled with fire extinguishing fluid, and intended to be hurled and broken at the base of a fire. They were made to shrapnel and break explosively, spreading their contents quickly over a wide area, as you can tell by their design and shape. The photos attempt to tell the story and show the detail. Not many of these bottles have survived seeing t purpose was to be destroyed.
