Miss Liberty is seated facing left, with the date 1871 below. She is wearing a plumed Indian headdress similar to that found on the gold dollars of 1854 and 1856 (and other currency issues) and she is supporting a pole in her right hand. She rests on a globe inscribed LIBERTY and behind her are two flags, one of which is ornamented with 15 stars. Around her are 13 stars. James Barton Longacre (1794-1869) was appointed Chief Engraver of the United States Mint on September 16, 1844, after the death of Christian Gobrecht.
