LONGACRE’S PATTERN ‘INDIAN PRINCESS’ 1871 DOLLAR The obverse of this remarkable pattern features Longacre’s version of the ‘Liberty Seated’ design. Miss Liberty is seated facing left, with the date 1871 below. She is wearing a plumed Indian headdress similar to that found on the gold dollars of 1854 and 1856 (and other currency issues) and she is supporting a pole in her right hand. She rests on a globe inscribed LIBERTY and behind her are two flags, one of which is ornamented with 15 stars. Around her are 13 stars. James Barton Longacre (1794-1869) was appointed Chief Engraver of the United States Mint on September 16, 1844, after the death of Christian Gobrecht. He served in the post until his own death on January 1, 1869. Although he was assisted by others from time to time (notably Anthony C. Pacquet) most of the new pattern designs made during his tenure were from his hand. He leaned heavily on certain work of his predecessor, as in his use in 1854-1855 of the flying eagle design Gobrecht had used on the 1838 half dollars and his use in 1856-1858 of the flying eagle first employed on Gobrecht’s 1836 silver dollar. Also, Gobrecht’s Liberty Seated motif furnished a good deal of inspiration. Much of Longacre’s work was strictly original, such as the Liberty Head used on the 1848 gold $1 and $20, the Indian Princess gold $1 and $3 of 1854, the superb ‘Indian Princess’ pattern coins, of which the Dollar was the largest, and the Indian Head cent. Eventually, Longacre’s dies were used on hundreds of different pattern coins. Longacre was born in Delaware County, Pennsylvania on August 11, 1794. As a youth he was apprenticed in Philadelphia to James F. Watson the bookseller, and later to George Murray, a banknote engraver who also employed Christian Gobrecht. Then, Longacre set out on his own in 1819 and engraved metal plates for bank notes and book illustrations. In 1830, Longacre and an associate James Herring made plans for a series of illustrated biographies of famous American men. The ‘National Portrait of Distinguished Americans’ was published in 1834. In the late 1860s Longacre had prepared various designs for pattern coins and after his death his assistant and successor William Barber (1807-1879) produced dies from these. The ‘Indian Princess Dollar’ was produced as a possible replacement for the Liberty Seated currency dollar design which had served the nation since Gobrecht’s original dated 1836. Sadly, Longacre’s dollar was never adopted for currency and only a small number of patterns in various experimental metals exist. This recreation of Longacre’s masterpiece has been produced in 3 metals metals - nickel silver, copper and a golden alloy.
