THIS IS AN ORIGINAL POSTCIVIL WAR BAYONET. It is for the Springfield Model 1870 U.S. NavyRolling Block Rifle. This is a heavy, brass-hilted Model 1871 Ames bayonet with straight blade, which mounts on a lug underneath the barrel. This bayonet measures 24" long and is stamped U.S.N. G.G.S. 1871 on one side and on the other side it is stamped AMES MFG. CO. CHICOPEE, MASS. The ANCHOR LOFGO is on both sides of the handle. The blade has some minor surface rust but no significant pitting or nicks. (see pictures). My on-line research indicates that the G.G.S is the inspectors stamp and stands for G.G. Saunders. T he winning bidder pays $9.90 more for packaging job and for postage with delivery confirmation within continental USA.. I only accept PayPal.
