1872 Patent Model Steam Gauge w/Tags Has Clock-Like Escapement & 3 PointersPatented September 17, 1872 by T C Hargrave of Boston, Mass and granted US Patent Number 131,347. This model has both the receiving tag and the official Patent Office tag -- it is rare to find both tags still with the patent model. Also included is a copy of the patent with 2 pages of drawings, 1 page of text and a Certificate of Authenticity. You can see copies of the original patent documents at /patents and type in the patent number. Based on reading the patent, I suspect this design was an effort the impress the insurance companies who in the 1870s were demanding more accountability from the boiler operators. If it impressed the insurance companies, then they would demand it be used on boilers they insured... and thus is how business is conducted! It is a normal Bourdon tube steam gauge, that has 2 additional pointers and would also would record the number of times a preset pressure was exceeded and the overall highest pressure reached. As with most patent steam gauges, which wanted to show the inner workings, there is no face plate. Note that the tip of main pointer may be slightly truncated; the other two pointers are complete and the fine springs seem to be connected and working. I do not know if the gauge functions as claimed. Also the bezel is slightly out of round. The gauge would benefit from a good cleaning and will be a premier addition to any advanced collection.
