1872 Pattern ‘Meat Can’ (117-A) This very scarce 1872 Pattern Meat Can (or mess kit) is in fine condition, made of heavy tin, about 6 ½” long, 5 3/16ths” deep, and 1 3/8ths” wide, with impressed letters “US”, a collapsible bale handle when stored in a haversack, and a large ear-shaped handle on one side. The tin was to carry the soldier’s meat ration. The inserted lid could be used as a cup. These were carried in a fitted compartment inside a haversack. This ration tin has only a few light rust stains and much bright tinned surface remains, although now rubbed and scratched with age. A peek inside shows just how bright this meat can was when first issued. These have always been very scarce in spite of all soldiers being issued one.
