RARE 1873 1ST EDITION CALIFORNIA MAPS ILLUSTRATED WINE Description: ON AUCTION is a rare 1873 first edition, California for Health, Pleasure and Residence, a book for Travelers and Settlers, by Charles Nordhoff, published by Harper & Brothers, New York, 1873. Bound in terra cotta colored cloth, gilt titles, a squarish 9x7 inches, 255 pages. PROFUSELY ILLUSTRATED with hundreds of engravings and many full page maps. This was a book intended for settlers, who were pouring into California by the hundreds of thousands, in the wake of the Gold Rush, many looking at the rich land waiting for them for farming purposes. Sections on: The Central Pacific Railroad, Hints to Travellers, the Agricultural Wealth of California, a January Day in Los Angeles, Wheat Farming in the San Joaquin Valley, Wine Growing in California, some estimates of cost. This is an interesting copy because it has marks from the Los Angeles Public Library, the Park Branch, Glendale Blvd. We find it astonishing that the LA Public Library would de-accession a work that is fundamental to the early development of California, but their stupidity can be your gain.
