T his Auction is for a very unique pair of antique Victorian books. The first is a very large leather bound Bible gilded in gold leaf.
The second, a book entitled "Life of the Blessed Virgin Mary and our Lord Jesus Christ" also leather bound and decorated with gold leaf. Both contain the Approbations of the Bishop of Philadelphia, Right Rev. James F. Wood. D.D. The Bible Contains the entire Canonical Scriptures according to the decree of the Council of Trent . Translated from the Latin Vulgate: diligently compared with the Hebrew, Greek, and other editions in divers languages. Revised and corrected according to the Clementine edition of the Scriptures with annotations by the Rev. Dr. Challoner. Together with : References A historical and chronological index A table of the Epistles and Gospels for all the Sundays and Holy Days The most notable feasts in the Roman calendar Instructive and devotional matter Approbations of 51 Bishops and Archbishops A translation of the Decree of the Council of Trent A prayer before reading any part of the Holy Scripture The order of the Books of the Old Testament The History of the Catholic Bible, illustrated with many large and fine engravings An introduction to the proper reading of the Sacred Book This Bible weighs just over 10# and measures 12 x 10 1/2 x 3 1/2 T Are Many Family Pages Present: Marriage Certificate - Blank Marriages - Blank Births and deaths - Blank Photo pages - Present This Bible is in great shape throughout. The pages are strong, clean and bright with no water stains or foxing. The onion paper protecting the engravings is intact. T are many engravings, some by Gustave Dore. The binding is solid and the hinges without any tears. The brass clasp is in perfect working order. The leather has been treated with a Library of Congress compliant preservative to ensure long life. We always include additional preservative and instructions for it's use. Treated properly this Bible will last many more generations. The Life of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Our Lord Jesus Christ The second book in this auction is very impressive at over 11# and measuring 12 x 10 x 4 1/2. Authored by Abbe M. Orsini, Honorable Vicar General of GAP, Member of the Historic Institute of France and Brasil , Knight of the Legion of Honor. This volume was printed in 1870, in Philadelphia by John Kelly and sons. It contains many fine steel engravings with the onion protective paper intact. Some of the contents: 52 Meditations on The Litany of The Most Blessed Virgin 18 chapters on The Life of the Blessed Virgin, Mother of God 14 chapters on The History of The Devotion To The Blessed Virgin Mary Month by month Historical Calendar of the Feasts of The Blessed Virgin The second section of this book is entitled: The life, Doctrine, and Sufferings of Our Blessed Lord and Savior Jesus Christ As recorded by the four evangelists with moral reflections, critical illustrations and explanatory notes. This section alone is 569 pages and includes: Numerous essays on the life of Jesus Christ Appendix A chronological table of the life of Christ A table of the Gospels for all Sundays, Holidays, and other particular occasions throughout the year T Are Many Family Pages Present In This Book Also: Marriage Certificate - Blank Marriages - Blank Births and deaths - Blank Photo pages - Present This Holy Book is also in great shape. It has been professionally rebound in the original binding and is very strong and usable. T is minor moisture staining in the back section.
