Offered here is an 1876 German 5 Mark silver coin. Minted in Stuttgart, Germany, as designated by the "F" mint mark on the bottom center. It is composed of 27.7770 grams of .900 fine silver. This coin was struck just five years after the King of Prussia became the German Emperor William I, uniting the formerly independent city-states of Germany into an empire. Prior to 1871 there were as many as 1800 individual states each minting their own money. Under William the Empire began issuing coinage of 1 Mark and less, but allowed the States to mint gold and silver coins of values above 1 Mark. The state of Wurttemberg, which issued this coin, was located in the southwest of the country and included the city of Stuttgart where this was minted. On the obverse is Charles I (Karl Friedrich Alexander) King of Wurttemberg. He was married to Olga Nikolaievna of Russia (the daughter of Tsar Nicholas I). This issue was only minted in 4 years (1874, 1875, 1876, and 1888). The mintage for 1876 was only 897,000. This is a very nice example. It has a gray tone. Nice details on Karls face and hair and the reverse details are incredible...right down to the shield on the eagle WITHIN the shield on the German Imperial eagle.
