Jules Verne. AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS. Translated by Geo. M. Towle. Philadelphia : Porter & Coates, n.d. [1876]. Original brown cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt. Early American edition, technically a later impression of the first illustrated American edition. Osgood was the first in America to publish this Verne title, both in a small unillustrated format in July 1873 and in a fully-illustrated format (from British sheets) in November of that year. However in March 1876 Osgood sold at auction the plates and remainders of its Verne books, and Porter & Coates paid $410.00 for the plates of illustrated version, along with 310 sets of sheets at cost. Porter & Coates then published the present edition from those plates, in December 1876. This copy is in Porter & Coates's new binding, with the title printed horizontally on the spine (some are in the old Osgood style, with a circular spine title); in both cases, Detective Fix appears on the front cover, gazing out to sea (though on the new-style copies, he is centered and no sea or sky is shown). This is a remarkably bright copy, very good, with little external wear; the endpapers are cracked, and an 1888 inscription on the frontispiece recto has partially bled through.
