is a RARE US United States Army Letter regarding the Special Order Appointment of a soldier in the Fifth 5th Infantry under Nelson Miles ONLY 3 months after the 7th Cavalry under George Armstrong Custer and brother Tom were massacred at the Battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876 by Sitting Bull and the Sioux. The Document is addressed to the Tongue River Cantonment, a fort that was set up at this time as an outpost for the Army to pusue Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse during a winter campaign. The 5th Infantry at this time under Miles were involved in several historically significant events in the Aftermath of the Centennial and the fiasco at the Little Big Horn. Specifically, they were in hot pursuit of the Indians and in early October the famous meeting at CEDAR CREEK between the lines of soldiers and Indians occured with the 5th and Sitting Bull. The Indian leader contacted Miles for this pow wow as outlined in Deeds of Daring, a reference on Medal of Honor Winners. During this meeting both leaders insisted they would NOT back down, with Miles asking for peaceful surrender and Sitting Bull trying to shake him down for food and indicating that the whole west belonged to the nomadic Sioux. A photo from this source is shown in a scan. At any rate this ORIGINAL Document is related to this event and the adjutant has signed Nelson Miles on behalf of the man who would later be the general to put and end to the uprising for good at Wounded Knee. Along with some guides and government issued books, it has been a valued piece in an Indian Wars and Custer Collection that I am liquidating.
