Up for auction is a scarce antiquarian edition of a classic history of black magic and witchcraft by the father of Mary Shelley, entitled LIVES OF THE NECROMANCERS; or, An Account of the Most Eminent Persons in Successive Ages who Have Claimed for Themselves, or to Whom Has Been Imputed by Others , THE EXERCISE OF MAGICAL POWER , by William Godwin. Published in London by Chatto & Windus in 1876. 282 pages plus 32 pages of publisher's ads in rear. William Godwin was the father of Mary Shelley, the author of FRANKENSTEIN , and this idiosyncratic work examines the practice of magic back to the ancient world, with sections on Greece, Rome, "the history of necromancy in the east", the "dark ages of Europe", "the communication of Europe and the Saracens, "sanguinary proceedings against witchcraft," and more. Includes reference to historic figures who practiced magic such as Socrates, Nero, Apuleius, Apollonius of Tyana, Gerbert (Pope Silvester II), Albertus Magnus, Roger Bacon, Artephius, Raymond Lull, Joan of Arc, Trithemius, Cornelius Agrippa, Faustus, Nostradamus, John Fian, the Lancashire Witches, William Lilly and many others. Godwin's work originally appeared in 1834.
