artist signed "G.H. Lovett." High relief sculpture of a sailing ship in stormy sea, about to be smashed upon the shore, while two men on shore are firing a life-line to the ship from a cannon in front of gabled roofed building with "Relief" on side. Relief inscription above "Life Saving Benevolent Association of New York" and below "INCD. 29th March/1849." Reverse with engraved presentation inscription "Presented/To/John Allan/as a token in commendation for/his noble saving, at the age of/thirteen years, in leaping into/deep water at Newport, R.I./and at the peril of his own life,/rescuing George Theodore Swan,/aged nine years, from drowning/July 20 1876." Laurel wreath surround and relief inscription at top "Vita Felicibus Ausis Servata" (life, happiness learning & service). The medallion is 2" d., approx. 18kt-22kt and weight 50 grams, 1.765 oz., 32.2 dwt.. In fitted leather case marked "Ball Black & Co.". Geo. H. Lovett (American 1824-94) was noted for producing over 300 medals and campaign items.Condition: Medallion appears to have been dropped on edge with minor dent at edge, case quite worn, still VG.
