Large & important American Victorian silverplate vase holder with beautiful Smith Bros. enameled glass ring vase. The figural squirrel & leaf motif holder was produced by the Meriden Britannia Co. of Meriden, Connecticut and is shown as a hand-drawn illustration with a glass ring vase in their 1877 trade catalog as shown in the pictures. Both the holder and the catalog illustration bear the same pattern number: 303. Smith Brothers of New Bedford, Massachusetts produced exquisitely hand-decorated glass for both Reed & Barton and the Meriden Britannia Co. for use with their silverplate lines during the 1870' & 1880's. While this floral and bird vase is not marked, the gorgeous enameled decoration shows all of the careful detail that the Smith Brothers were famous for producing. Additionally, the glass used is heavy Boston & Sandwich glass as identified by the bottom impressions on the vase; Smith Brothers ring vases were characteristically Boston & Sandwich glass. The vase fits snugly into the holder and the pair are original to one another. Both the holder and vase are in outstanding condition. The holder shows no loss of silverplate, dents and no missing parts or pieces. The enameled and painted vase shows some wear to the gold highlight of the white raised horizontal rings which is in keeping with age and handling over time; t are no chips, cracks, flea bites or other defects to the vase and the enameled/painted surfaces show no sign of wear. The backside of the vase is not decorated, but is a solid blue like the background color. A vase with holder of this large scale is exceedingly hard-to-find intact, and is a piece for a serious collector of American Victorian silverplate and art glass. Dimensions are as follows: Overall Height 16-3/4" (Both Pieces Together); Holder 4-3/4" (Base Diameter), 3" (Holder Opening Diameter), 10" High; Glass Vase 2-15/16" (Bottom Diameter), 3" (Top Diameter), 7-3/4" High.
