A collectable and scarce Victorian guide to the River Thames from Oxford to London, published in Oxford in 1877 by Henry Taunt. Title: Taunt's Map of the River Thames from Oxford to London, Pocket Edition Publisher: Oxford: Henry W. Taunt, [1877] This charming guide book contains a very long folding hand-coloured lithograph map of the river on 24 separate panels, dissected and laid on linen, bound concertina-style and affixed to the front pastedown (the map measures over 3 metres long). Adjacent to the map is the separate text containing xiv + 115 numbered pages (ending on the rear pastedown). The first eight preliminary pages are all adverts for Henry Taunt's various enterprises (including one with a real photograph of his shop at 8-9 Broad Street, Oxford), and the final 50 pages contain various trade advertisements (some illustrated) for businesses based in Oxford, or businesses relating to middle class pastimes of the day such as fishing, cycling, boating, etc.The text itself contains descriptions of all the principal places along the route, with useful information including hotels and inns, boat hire, local fishermen, etc.The map and text are bound into the original hardback green blindstamped cloth gilt.
