A Memorial of the International Temperance Conference Held in Philadelphia, June, 1876 With many steel and wood engravings. With the specially prepared Essays, Addresses of Foreign Delegates, Deliberations of the Conference, Woman's International Temperance Convention, National Division Sons of Temperance, Foreign Correspondence, Roll of Delegates, Report of Centennial Committee, a full History of the General Cause of Temperance for the Century; also, Histories of the Sons of Temperance, Good Templars, Temple of Honor, National Temperance Society, Woman's National Christian Temperance Union, Catholic Total Abstinence Union, Good Samaritans, Friends of Temperance, United Friends of Temperance, Rechabites, Cadets, Reform Clubs; British Templars, Prohibition in Canada, together with a History of the Cause in Great Britain, United Kingdom Alliance, National Temperance League, British Temperance League, Scottish Temperance League, Band of Hope Union, the Cause in New Zealand, etc. National Temperance Society and Publication House 1877 This is an extremely interesting piece of American history containing essays and papers such as “A Knock at the Door of Christ’s Church”, “The Liquor-Traffic a Source of Lawlessness and Crime”. “The Results of Twenty-five years of Prohibition in Maine” and many more. Along with the histories listed above are histories of Temperance in India, Temperance in Jamaica, Madagascar, China and Sweden to name a few. This volume is packed with interesting precise details such as statistics stating facts as followed; Loss on labor from use of liquor $1,244,395,000, and grain wasted $36,000,000 Also noted is that these facts say nothing of the millions spent on account of crime, pauperism, and insanity, to protect society and relieve misery. Other statistics include; Number made insane through alcohol annually, 9,338. At a loss of 98,259 years of effective life, $ 500 per year, worth $49,129,500. Number of idiots from the same cause, an annual loss of 319,908 years of effective life, $500 per year, worth $159,954,000. T is far too much information to mention, but this volume is a thorough account of the temperance cause at the time of this conference, and at this point in American History. This 131 year old, very rare treatise remains in excellent condition. The cloth boards and spine are engraves with gold gilt, which is flawless. The pages are clean and free of any markings with many impressions, some tissue guarded as is the frontispiece, and the end pages are a deep chocolate color. T is some light foxing to the frontispiece and the tissue is wrinkled, and some other very scattered light foxing. The pages have a slight wave to them and t some other very minor flaws, but none so noticeable to mention. In all, given its age, rarity, and superb condition this treatise would indeed be an excellent addition to any collector’s library. Dimentions are 9 by 7 by 3, a stout, heavy book.
