First year of issue for the Morgan design, this one has seen slight wear and is in AU condition. The coin imaged here is the one you will get. FREE DOMESTIC MAILING on this coin! THE MORGAN DOLLAR The coin is named after its designer, George T. Morgan, an English engraver who conceived both sides of the coin. On the obverse is featured a bust of Lady Liberty, complete with Morgan’s monogram near her neck. The reverse of the coin shows the Great Seal of the United States. The coin was issued by the U.S. mint in direct response to the Comstock Lode silver strike on the eastern slope of Mount Davidson in what is now known as Virginia City, Nevada. The finding was made public in 1859, and grew tremendous attention from soon-to-be prospectors all around the country, as this was the major U.S. discovery of silver and gold ore. Because so much silver entered the market, silver prices began to decline. In order to combat this downward movement, congress passed the Bland-Allison Act which required the Treasury Department to purchase silver, & strike it as coins.
