In 1878 the U.S. mints (in Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Carson City) began the production of “Morgan” silver dollars. The Philadelphia mint produced several varieties that year including the 7- tail feather, the 8-tail feather, and the 7 over 8-tail feather variety. The coin offered here is the most difficult of these 1878 coins…the 7 over 8-tail feather variety. The coin will grade out as an EXTRA FINE specimen of this highly desired silver dollar that looks much better in actuality than it does on the scan which does not do this particular coin justice. Although it is hard to see on the scan there are actually parts of five feather tips clearly evident underneath the normal 7-feathers. This is significant in that many coins of this type show only one or two feathers showing. Generally speaking the more tips that show, the more valuable the coin.
