This is a very interesting and quite rare original little antique volume which was published in France in the later part of the 19th Century, a "PLAN-GUIDE, COMPLET & DEFINITIF, for the EXPOSITION INTERNATIONALE", at Paris, France in 1878, and "PAR FREZOULS, CONDUCTEUR DES PONTS ET CHAUSEES".....the booklet contains a multi-paneled fold out accurately scaled map of the Expo, done at the scale of 1/2 millimetre per meter, and measures approximately 4 1/2" by 6 1/2" overall folded closed in the blue, gilt-stamped boards, opening out to approximately 13" by 35" overall....the color and detail are quite good overall, and the panels of the map are largely very clean and supple, but t is quite a bit of obvious splitting and separation occurring along several of the folded seams of the inner panels, with some obvious nicking and chipping along the borders and backstrip of the covers as well, and a couple of ex-library markings stamped to the borders of the inside back cover and the reverse side of the map....the inside back cover has text entirely in French, which apparently (in my haphazardly translated French to English approximation) refers to the "Rigorous and exact scaling of the map, done after the official documents by the original author, with all modifications immediately done/made....", and also references the Plan of the Exposition of 1867, although I'm not at all certain if this is stating that this 1878 version is based on the earlier Expo's Plan, or that the other Plan-Guide is also still available from the author (Frezouls)....in any event, and despite my failure to grasp the precise intent and meaning of the French text, it is a wonderful little historic collectible of the era, is generally very good overall, and would benefit nicely from professional conservation and linen backing for a proper viewing and appreciation....this is part of a series of rare collectibles and antique items, vintage magazines and bulletins, Hugo Gernsback Magazines on Radio and Electricity, and other items of ephemera including vintage photographs, programs, and rare and unusual books and magazines relating to Fashion, Christmas and Holiday Collectibles and Cards, Electric Vehicles, Trucks, Automotive and Hollywood Memorabilia, Natural History, Science, Geology, Art, Aviation, and other subjects of great interest (take your pick), that I'll be listing over the next couple of weeks at whipplesbooks on ebay.
