This is a pretty remarkable medal from the 1878 Paris World's Fair, a very large (just a shade under 53mm in diameter) and dramatic piece in white metal, possibly nickel as it is not soft or dull. The scans shown here don't do the medal justice, but you can see the typically dramatic Paris world's fair design, something we've come to expect on all the Paris fair pieces from 1878 to 1889, 1900 and into the 20th century.The medal has the woman reclining around a variety of technological advancements and those for which the French were proud in showing the world in the late 19th century. Interesting that besides what appears to be a cathedral in the background there are farming and grape growing and many industrial and farming scenes, and at the bottom of the obverse, what appears to be a cannon, as well.Not surprising at all, the medal was engraved by the very famous French medallic artist, Dubois, noted for many pieces of numismatic coinage associated with French world's fairs.The obverse is low on words, with just the "Exposition Universelle/Paris 1878 around the perimeter. Then comes the reverse, which makes this of even greater interest.The reverse is essentially blank, with just a simple wavy line pattern that makes it appear to be a cross-hatch pattern, but the "waves" of lines simply create uniform spaces that form the top/bottom read more
