Hand-written letter dated Dec. 23, 1879, San Francisco. "Dear friend, Pardon my tardy response to your kind letter and accept my sincere thanks for the momento it contained. Aside from its intrinsic worth, its origin, its sacredness (?), it is doubly endearing to me as a token of friendship from one who has found a respondent chord in my heart. I regret to hear of your illness and trust it will have passed away ere (?) this; and that all the pleasures and happiness of a "Merry Christmas" will be yours. Again accept my thanks and believe me Your Friend, James O'Neill." It is framed with a sticker from Goodspeed's Bookshop in Boston and was framed in 1935 according to the sticker. Please note that I got this at an auction and have no provenance, however according to my research, O'Neill was in San Francisco at the time playing Christ in "The Passion Play" by Salmi Morse, for which he was arrested under a local ordinace forbiding impersonation of God. I have no idea what this is worth and I am open to serious offers. Please email me with any questions before you make an offer.
