1879-S
In 1879, the San Francisco mint was still in the process of adjusting to Morgan’s reverse die changes. Tfore, the 1879-S coin exists with two distinct reverses. Most of the issue saw the use of the Type III (breast rounded outward) reverse. A smaller quantity of pieces were produced with the Type II (concave) reverse. The latter coin sells for a slight premium.
The 1879-S Morgan dollar is easily one of the most attractive coins in the entire series. Approximately 30% of the coins available today are in mint condition. An overwhelming majority of these pieces can be found in Mint State 65 condition or better. This is due to the superb strike on almost every coin, blazing mint luster, and a small number of surface abrasions. Due to these three key characteristics all coming together in one issue, the 1879-S date is one of the most common Morgan dollars in gem condition. These pieces which exist in MS-60 usually have problems with too many bagmarks.
It is possible that as much as one-fourth of all of the Mint State specimens are prooflike coins. This included both MS-60 and MS-65 prooflikes. Very few are impaired, other than with abrasions. Almost every one is a cameo. Due to the abundance of high quality pieces, superb gem cameos are reasonably priced at about twice the MS-65 coins, and only 75% higher than the non-prooflike gem.
LaVere Redfield, the Nevadan who hoarded over 400,000 Morgan and Peace dollars, took an interest in this date. When his stash was inventoried after his death in 1974, it was found to contain several thousand uncirculated 1879-S dollars. Many were said to be cameos. It is already well known that 2,000 to 4,000 coins in this collection carried the second reverse design, which had been prohibitively scarce until the Redfield release. One major dealer acquired these coins and successfully promoted them as a scarce, but available variety. This accounts for the 1879-S date now being quoted as a more expensive coin than the 1880-S, 1881-S, and the 1882-S dates.

Morgan Dollars are a favorite of collectors everyw Authorized by the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, the dollars were designed by George T. Morgan, who had been a pupil of Wyon in the Royal Mint in London. His initial M is found at the base of the neck by the last lock of hair on the obverse, and on the reverse on the left most loop of the ribbon. They were made from 1878 to 1921, when the Peace dollar was adopted.
