1880-S
Many dollar collectors feel that the 1880 San Francisco Morgan dollar is one of the most striking, most perfect coins ever made. It is certainly superb in its overall appearance. The outstanding brilliance of most specimens is outdone by few, if any, issues. Only the 1879-S and the 1881-S dates give this issue any real competition in the luster category. Bagmarks are unusually light and shallow.
The 1880-S dollar is common in mint condition and is almost always found boldly struck. The eagle’s breast feathers are magnificently visible to the naked eye. On the obverse, Liberty’s ear and hair ringlets stand out in great, minute detail. Because of these outstanding qualities, and because of its relatively inexpensive price, the 1880-S date is very popular with collectors.
Almost nine million of these pieces were minted. While it is almost a certainty that many were melted, it is probable that three million members of this date are still in existence. Dealers estimate that of the surviving population, about 50% exist in Mint State. Only 25% of these coins in mint condition are MS-60s; the remainder are either MS-65, MS-65+, or MS-65 prooflike.
LaVere Redfield bought and hoarded thousands of uncirculated 1880-S dollars. These were released in 1976 as a part of the liquidation of his estate. The total hoard contained over 400,000 examples of Morgan and Peace dollars.
A few varieties of this date exist. T is an ’80 over ’79 overdate which sells for a slight premium, and t are large S and small S mintmark varieties.
Prooflike cameos are available in substantial quantities. The coin’s devices are very frosty, in contrast with extremely reflective mirror fields. This is one of the highest quality Morgan dollar prooflike coins. It costs about 60% more in MS-65 prooflike condition than it does in the plain MS-65 grade.

Morgan Dollars are a favorite of collectors everyw Authorized by the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, the dollars were designed by George T. Morgan, who had been a pupil of Wyon in the Royal Mint in London. His initial M is found at the base of the neck by the last lock of hair on the obverse, and on the reverse on the left most loop of the ribbon. They were made from 1878 to 1921, when the Peace dollar was adopted.
