1880 Kansas Ghost Town Letter with cover. Arvonia, Kansas was founded in 1869 by Welsh settlers. Located in Osage County along the Marias Des Cygnes River, the town peaked at 750 with three stores, blacksmith & wagon shop, sawmill, the Dooley hotel, a cheese factory, a post office, a schoolhouse, town hall and two churches. The town was established anticipating a railroad which never arrived and it thus declined. Today what remains are the schoolhouse [see #5 from internet] built in 1872, the Calvinistic Methodist Church [see #6 from internet] built in 1883, the town well and a couple of homes - Pop-12. The post office existed from 1869-1901. Cover has 3 cent stamp and "bulls eye" or concentric circle cancellation. The "Arvonia May 8 Kas [?]" is a bit shaky [see #4]. Letter is datelined "Arvonia, Kansas May 5th 1880 -" and is a fantastic women's letter from rural Victorian America. [#7 is a photograph of a family in 1896 in Arvonia] It appears the author "Janie" is living with her Aunt Jennie in Arvonia but Jennie has not received the deed to her property. The recipient, Miss Jennie Seymour, lives in Monroe City, Missouri and is still living there in 1907. If it doesn't work out in Arvonia, both Aunt Jennie and Janie are looking to live in Monroe City, "Aunt Jennie" would like to have a boarding house and "Janie" might teach school. read more
