Antique handmade & hand carved scrap pine wood mitten knitting form with it's original hanging string still attached at the wrist retaining it's original old dry and age toned natural wood surface, as found. Maine , 1880's, probably earlier. Guaranteed old and original; this is not a fake or reproduction. Actual weight 1/4 lbs. 14 1/8" tall by 3 5/8" wide by 1/4" thick. Antique handmade & hand carved scrap pine wood mitten knitting form with it's original hanging string still attached at the wrist retaining it's original old dry and age toned natural wood surface, as found. This is a single then scrap pine board that has been hand carved and whittled to make a form for knitting mittens to make sure they are the right size, same size and matched. These are quite scarce and rarely encountered but are a well known Maine farm primitive. Making mittens; lots of mitten pairs, was common for they saw hard winter use and wore out. Pair after pair, each the same size and usually made from the same dull colored heavy wool, was greatly assisted with a mitten knitting form. Mitten after mitten was fitted over the form to assure a matching finish. Paired up, stacked up and then distributed during the winter months as needed, this template was the knitter's secret weapon assuring them a briskly knitted pile of matching pairs. We have not encountered one of these in a while and admit that this one almost got away. Aren't we lucky that our policy is "TAKE EVERYTHING - THROW OUT THE CRUD LATER". This gem of Maine primitive art turned up the other day in the scrap lumber pile from the attic of the estate! It is not hard to appreciate once it is in one's hand! Smooth old surface and wonderful oxidized age toned surface from years of fitting mittens over it assure that it is the real thing. Very good as found condition. T is nothing wrong with this at all. So often the thumbs have broken off but this form's thumb is fully intact. It even has it's old thin hanging string still tied around the wrist. The mitten form is perfect, untouched, as found and just great. Right out of the scrap lumber pile from the attic, it has appropriate surface oxidation and soiling for it's age and from it's old farm residence. Please see photographs.
