Salt-Glazed Jug: Burlington VT 1880s This salt-glazed jug is 19th C utility Americana with bright-spirit folk art. The design is a flower with a free-form bird or insect above. The artist-designer is a very confident one. This jug is labeled D.L. & A.K. Dallard, Burlington VT. The pottery used the waters of Lake Champlain and rivers for transport of its wares. Note the size: Under the name Dallard, 2 is imprinted over a 3. The jug holds 2+ gallons, actually 36 cups, a slightly larger size than the usual 2 gallon jug. The hand-decorated stoneware with free-flowing cobalt blue motifs was used in the kitchen, dairy, tavern, and shop for storage, salting, and pickling. The jug has held tall flowers and leaves in the recent past. The condition is free of chips. A slight indent at the neck is part of the manufacture. A professional repair (invisible) is on a 4" surface hairline, last photo. This jug has many dark speckles or spots on the surface and variations on the surface. T are tiny surface indents w particles of salt hit when thrown in the kiln. The largest of these is 3" right of the handle in the last photo. These jugs were "workers" items, and many, as this one, have surface imperfections. In all, the jug is a spirited reminder of fun in design and new uses for old utilities.
