Antique handmade wood & wire farm kitchen potato masher with it's original lathe turned & hand carved thin wooden handle with it's bulbous top, it's original coiled wire spring type masher attached to the handle, it's original Maine farm summer kitchen hanging string and the remains of an older hanging string and retaining it's original old kitchen usage patina, age toned & oxidized wire and natural wood surface, as found. Maine , 1880's, probably earlier. Guaranteed old and original; this is not a fake or reproduction. Actual weight 1/2 lbs. 11 1/4" tall by 3 1/2" diameter at the bottom. Yesterday we listed a wooden beauty of a Maine farm masher we found in the kitchen drawer. Today we list thisâe¦ oppositeâe¦ we found hanging in the summer kitchen. But doesn't it look just great in the bowl we just listed! They were both in that summer kitchen and we bet that this masher mashed potatoes in that bowl. Designed and made for mashing potatoes as an early small factory production - farm yard peddled from the peddler's wagon- true early kitchen gizmo one needs to push aside the proud wooden ware heritage we expounded yesterday and turn that upside down to âe¦fully appreciateâe¦ this listing. Kitchen miracle workers made cheap and of fantasy design began to appear for barter in the farm yard right after the Civil War. "HOW ABOUT THIS" waved in the peddler's hand, passed to the woman holding her eggs and egg money DID get these âe¦often pretty shoddy and dubiousâe¦ tools into the farm kitchen wâe¦ it was quickly put to the usage test. Did this one pass? The key tips are the handle and the wire spring end. The last has come detached from it's original solder spot that made a full round at the end. So what; they kept using it anyway. That's why the handle not only has pleasing usage patina but also why âe¦ the whole handle & spring sort of cocks off to the right when it's set down. Some right hander whaled on the potatoes âe¦probably in that wooden bowlâe¦ with this masher for quite a fewâe¦ decades. Then it was hung up for a last time until we unhooked it. All this does prove that they did use this and did like it even though âe¦it sure wouldn't mash the potatoes like the wooden one. It is actually "pretty neat" just the way it looks, especially with the great old usage surface. And it does look great in that old bowl. Very good as found condition. We noted the detached wire solder above. They left that way, we would leave it that way too. Otherwise t is no damage and only positive features of old surface and genuine kitchen gizmo visual intrigue. Both of those make this a very nice and presumably scarceâe¦ old Maine farm kitchen potato masher. Right out of the summer kitchen, it has appropriate surface oxidation and soiling for it's age and from it's old farm residence. Please see photographs.
