Antique fireplace bellows made of leather, brass & steel tacks, brass nipple and paint decorated wood painted in it's original old yellow, gold, green and red decoration and retaining it's original old & well preserved dry shellacked surface, as found. New England , 1880's, possibly earlier. Guaranteed old and original; this is not a fake or reproduction. Actual weight 1 1/2 lbs. 17" long by 7" wide by 1 3/4" thick. Antique fireplace bellows made of leather, brass & steel tacks, brass nipple and paint decorated wood painted in it's original old yellow, gold, green and red decoration and retaining it's original old & well preserved dry shellacked surface, as found. Great paint . Bellows' leather deteriorated . The visible red leather; edges and nipple mount, are in fine shape. The bellows' leather in nearly perished. Evidently it was a poor or cheap tanning job of sheep skin that has dried up and fallen apart. To replace this would mean taking the edging off and possibly spoil the original surface soâe¦ for decoration onlyâe¦ this fine old bellows be. A positive is that one may view the "HOW DOES THIS WORK" aspect of these novel & handy fireplace tools w the leather has perish. Another positive is that this deterioration is not noticeable when the bellows is closed. We found these in the front parlor by the fireplace w they were once used but have stood as decoration for the past century. Totally original, untouched and as found these were used for quite a while before spending their days leaning against the old mantel. If one likes old yellow with splashy decoration, this old veteran bellows has that! A real eye catcher. Good rough as found condition. Bellows' leather deteriorated . 1 ½" scratch on the upper front center of the paint decoration, minor edge flaw to the shellac on the rear right edge, original leather hanging tab gone but it's original tack is t We like the bellows way they are and one could not make these work again without damaging the original surface. Best to consider these as in for decoration only condition. Right out of the front parlor of the farm house, the bellows has appropriate surface oxidation, wear and soiling for it's age and from it's old Maine farm residence. Please see photographs. As found last August in an estate in Montville , Maine . Seeking things fresh found in attics? Please see our other listings from this estate. The bellows set was in the front parlor by the fireplace. We have done nothing to it at all; it is just as we found it. It looks like good one to us! We offer this classic paint decorated bellows for $4.99 NR..
