Offered is a circa 1880s, exciting old Navaho Late Classic / Early Transitional weaving that measures 5 feet 10 inches long by 4 foot 9 inches wide or 70 inches by 57 inches and is in excellent condition. It was woven by a master spinner and weaver on a primitive upright loom of all Native hand shorn, hand carded and finely handspun silky old long staple Churro sheep wool weft on a fine early retightened 4-ply Germantown wool warp. It is the quality of the fine spun naturally worsted old silky Spanish Churro wool in this piece that dictates the date of this piece to the 1880s. The design is a bold open stepped or terraced diamond layout on the red ground. Filler elements centered in the diamonds are stacked triangles both striped and solid colors. The striped triangles portray the look found in the old Classical First Phase Ute Chief blankets. The fineness of the spin and weave in this old wearing serape rivals some of the best of the old Classic blankets. We obtained this vintage Native American textile in New Mexico just to offer to you on eBay. It has a very fine weft count per inch averaging 48 red, 40 yellow, 44 white, 42 black and 40 purple and a warp count of 8 per inch. The selvage cords and corner tassels have all been professionally restored. Warp selvages are 2-spiral cords each 2-ply, Z-spin and S-twist. Weft selvages are 2-spiral cords each 2-ply, Z-spin and S-twist. The corners are tight, original and in excellent condition. No holes, no odors, no moth nibbles, no fade and no snags. It has been professionally cleaned and comes from a non-smoking home. T are some light narrow streaked stains that show on one side of the blanket. Both sides are even in color and are shown in photos below. It lays flat and smooth. Colors are bright and strong in this old American Indian utilitarian piece and they are: hand dyed multiple shades of beautifully variegated crimson red (actually richer than depicted in the photos with much, much less of an orangish tinge), lavender dark bluish purple, shades of black either aniline or pinon pitch and sumac leaves, bright lemon yellow most likely from vegetal rabbit brush along with natural medium to dark brown and natural ivory white. Complete with lazy lines, this wonderful example of antique Native Americana is ready to display in your own hacienda, give as a special gift, or just tuck away in your private blanket + rug collection.
