What a wonderful piece! Very heavy. It appears to have been silver plated, but I can't tell for sure. I love to find items at estate sales and was lucky enough to find a lot of very good items recently. The estate contained many quality pieces. Lots of furniture from the 1800's. The item was represented to me as being true to that period, around 1880. I am no expert and cannot verify this information. But, maybe somebody out there can provide additional information to me that I can post with the auction. With a basic google search I found very similar items for sale at online antique shops, some for over 2,000. Some Black Forest wooden items are bringing over 300 here on ebay. The item is in very good condition. The cat has very nice glass eyes. The only flaw I could find is the hinge on the yarn ball is broken. I didn't notice this myself, it seemed to me the top just opened and closed without a hinge, but upon closer inspection I found it to be broken. I included a close up picture to show the hinge. The hinge takes nothing away from the look of the piece (in fact I never noticed!) The glass ink cup seems to be period, with plenty of blue ink from the last use. What a great cross collectable. Enjoy the piece. Also, don't hesitate to provide information, I love to learn! Free worldwide shipping.
