This unusual and amazing old silk scarf appeared among the very interesting collection of artifacts left in my Aunt's estate. All the local antique trade knew her as an astute appreciator of a broad range of antiques. She collected, bought, sold, and traded for herself most of the adult years of her 90 yr. life. Her daughter has no idea how she came to have this unique scarf. BBC's "Antiques Road Sshow" appraised an identical scarf a year or so ago at between about $700.00 and $1,200.00. Most of you fishing collectors will know about Isaak Walton, his world famous book, and his legacy to the art and craft of sport fishing so many years ago. Although I have not read 'The Complete Angler" (the 3rd most popular book in the English language after the Bible and Shakespeare's works), the fishing themes and details of this scarf must come from that work. Walton was an Englishman, and wrote about sport fishing in that part of the world in the 1600s. Many of the names of fish, descriptions of bait and lures, and how to prepare and preserve them are amusing and very strange to the modern angler.
The scarf measures 30"x 30 "with hand-sewn hem all around. It is a soft gold color over-printed in black. I can see a faint but illegible reference to an engraver's name and the date 1883.on the scarf. The condition is excellent with only a tiny slightly-larger-than-a-pin hole in the clear area in the upper left quadrant, and a small (about 1/2"x 3/4" faint stain in the clear area of the lower left quadrant. Otherwise it is very clean and undamaged. Of course, the most interesting features are the details of the printing. On both the side and top borders are listed the following four categories: "Flies", " Pastes", "Worms", "Fishes and Insects". I'll give one example of each: Flies- "No.2 Green Drake found among Stones by the River side from May to Midsummer"; Pastes- "No. 1 Mix the Blood of a Sheeps Heart with Flour and Honey to a Paste"; Worms- "No.2 Gentles found in Putrid Flesh lay them in Bran some days to seour"; Fishes and Insects- "No 7 Snails, slit.". On the bottom border center is printed the title of the scarf, "THE ANGLER'S COMPANION." On either side of the title are two panels of 8 bars each of "The Angler's Song". In each corner of the border t are 2 to 4 dry fly patterns; all different. In the center of the scarf is an image of Isaac Walton surrounded by an unusual combination of large urns, fishing nets, outdoor scenes of mountains, rivers, and various pieces of foliage and gnarly tree branches. In the bottom center is a grouping that includes a dip net, creel, 2 rods with lines attached, and a copy of the famous Book. T is an image of an otter with a fish in its mouth, another of an eel, and a 3rd of three fishermen lounging on the bank of a stream. But most prominent of all are the sketches of 14 different fish placed haphazardly throughout the scene. Each includes the name of the fish, the months to fish for them, the description of w to find them, and what bait to use. is one example; "ROACH May to Novr. In Sandy Bottom Deep Rivers at Ship Sterns, all Day 6 to12 Inches from the Ground House, Cow-dung and Ant Flies Paste No. 3, 4, Red Worms No.8 Insects, No 8 Gentles, and Cads." Completing the picture is a floral scroll design in the corners inside the border panels. The archaic English and unusual spelling and punctuation is a very interesting aspect of it all. This is truly an amazing piece. I've tried to do it justice with the photos, but I really can't. U.S. buyer pays actual shipping costs + $1.50 pkg. chg. Add whatever insurance you feel is necessary. Sincerely, Bill - auction payments made easy.
