FIRST EDITION. 8.5 x 5.75 inches. 52 pages, plus 18 fine lithograph plates, of which 14 are coloured and 10 folding) of various sections of the 16-inch naval guns of HMS Inflexible , built in Portsmouth in 1876. Original dark blue embossed cloth covered boards. A touch of fading on the top board and some light browning to the first few pages, otherwise a lovely clean copy. The folding plates are particularly crisp and fresh. Protected in a modern handmade archival cloth slipcase, leather label titled in gilt. The most progressive British battleship to follow HMS Warrior , HMS Inflexible incorporated a number of innovative design elements, many of which became standard features of later warship architecture ... Inflexible's 16-inch guns carried in two turrets mounted en echelon were also the largest fitted to that time. When commissioned, Inflexible was the most powerful warship in the world.
