Designer: William Barber ( Chief Engraver of the United States Min t) Denomination: Medal - Centennial of the incorporation of the city of Charleston Purpose: Authorized by the Charleston City Council in August 1883 and struck at the U.S. Mitn! Material: Bronze Diameter: 58mm Weight: 85.6gm Obverse (Great Seal of the City of Charlesburg): Togate seated figure of Lady Liberty, holding stick, topped by Cap of Liberty and rising right hand in a pointing gesture. Sailship at sea to left. Harbour-city-view of Charlesburg. Legend: AEDES MORES JURAQUE CURAT/ CIVITAS REGIMINE DONATA A.D. 1783/ CAROLOPOLIS CONDITA A.D. 1670 Comment: Designers signature (BARBER) on ground. Reverse: Thirteen stars, standing for the "Old Thirteen" US states in a star formation above legend in nine lines and date. All within wreath.
