Important American Bee Book by Professor Cook Cook, A.J.: THE BEE-KEEPERS' GUIDE; OR MANUAL OF THE APIARY. Chicago: 1884. xiv,337,[11] p. Illus. + [10] p. bee-related ads.Original green cloth, gilt bee on front cover. Some binding wear. Good plus condition. Eleventh edition. Thirteenth thousand. Cook was professor of entomology at Michigan State College (he later moved to Southern California and was a professor at Pomona College). He originally wrote this book as an instructional manual for his student beekeepers and then greatly expanded the text for use by the general beekeeper. Much information on practical beekeeping. Includes an interesting illustration of the various frame sizes then used (see picture). An important, comprehensive and well-written early American beekeeping manual. Describes hives used, smokers, all manner of beekeeping tools used at the time.Here is a quote from Cook's introduction: "Among the attractive features of apiculture, I mention the pleasure which it offers its votaries. There is a fascination about the apiary which is indescribable... It is hardly conceivable that the wide-awake apiarist, who is so frequently busy with his wonder-making comrades of the hive, can ever be lonely, or feel time hanging heavily on his hands.
