For your consideration is a unique 1882 appointment for Treasury Secretary of the United States. Document, signed by then-president Chester A Arthur, appoints Walter Q. Gresham to the position.Document, which is fresh to the market from a Washington D.C. estate, exhibits some foxing and general wear, but is otherwise clear and easy to read, retaining its original presidential seal.Featuring a strong autograph by Chester B. Arthur, who became president upon the assassination of James A. Garfield. It contains some interesting contemporary alterations. The line "I have nominated and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate" has been crossed out... possibly Gresham was appointed quickly without the advice of the Senate. After the document "authorize(s) and empower(s) him to execute and fulfil the duties of that Office according to law and to have and to hold the said Office, with all the powers, privileges and emoluments to the same of right appertaining unto" that", it is hand-written in ink "until the end of the next session of the Senate of the United States and no longer". The term Gresham was to serve was hence only temporary in nature. Indeed, he only served a month in the position, making him one of if not the shortest-serving Treasury Secretaries, and among the rarest to find historical documents relating to his position. read more
