Priced at considerably less than I paid for it! The horse is well wrapped and double-boxed to insure it reaches you safely.!
Per a potential buyer question: Has the piece been repainted? I used a blacklight and I gently lifted bridle/halter edges. I could not see any evidence that the piece had been repainted. There was no paint on the underside of the bridle/halter either (used a flashlight and small mirror in addition to checking with the blacklight), which would have occurred if repainted. I also checked the legs where the burlap-like fabric extends from the body. The paint edges look original to me and I can see no evidence of a second color/coat. German Horse Pull Toy on original wheeled base- 19th Century - very beautiful and rare size , 1885-1895; 31" ht. x 33" length; excellent condition! Leather bridle and ears; horsehair mane and tail; beautifully carved legs and face; body covering is brown, woven burlap-like material (original) filled with excelsior-like material; base has a painted border on top (light red) and the wheels are metal (original) and operational, i.e. they roll. The base has information on the underside which I attempted to photograph - regrettably it is hard to read in real life, too.. I grew up on a horse farm and showed performance and halter horses on the national circuit. I can honestly say that the conformation of the horse on this pull toy is exceptional. The legs are beautifully carved with fine definition in the canon bone, pastern, fetlock, and hoof. The top line is smooth and well defined.. The shoulder has the proper slope and angle. The rump and hip are exceptionally well proportioned, exhibiting the musculature one would hope to see in a fine show horse. The neck has a very pleasing arch with the head positioned properly and attached to the shoulder properly. The head has well spaced glass eyes, well carved features (dish and jowl) and even has the teeth carved (and painted) into the mouth. Purchased from Rick Mabrey, Raleigh, NC in 1992; provenance: from Massachusetts via New Hampshire (receipt/provenance will accompany purchase) I am moving and I do not have space to take this lovely piece with me. I have enjoyed him tremendously, but now is the time for someone else to get joy from this marvelous antique. He needs a loving Home!!!!! I HAVE DISCOVERED A LESS EXPENSIVE WAY TO SHIP - GREYHOUND EXPRESS IF INTERESTED SEND CITY, STATE, ZIP CODE FOR A QUOTE. YOU WILL HAVE TO PICK UP YOUR PACKAGE AT THE GREYHOUND DEPOT.
