Up for auction is a very unique soda bottle from Iowa that employed an internal marble stopper. The shoulder indentations were designed to keep the marble from going back into the lip once it had been opened. This auction is for the AQUA example with the amber streak going around it. The bottle is embossed on the front: WM. BEARLDSLEY / PATENTEE / BEACON / IOWA. The front embossing is flat and not pronounced like many sodas. The bottom is embossed: PAT MAY 12 TH 1885. Beardsley had ties to England, so perhaps he was motivated by the Codd style sodas used there. More information can be found on the history of this druggist / bottler in volume 1 of THE ANTIQUE BOTTLES OF IOWA and in volume 3 of the 2010 UPDATE TO THE ANTIQUE BOTTLES OF IOWA . There are a very few case wear dings on the sides of the bottle, as shown in the pics. Two similar small dings on the base as shown, and some very minor roughness on the lip, most likely from the ground lip process. A few very light patches of inside and outside haze. No other damage of any kind. The bottle is hand blown, not machine made, with a ground threaded lip. Color is aqua with a wild amber streak that wraps around much of the bottle. A most unusual variant with the amber streak. The bottle stands 7 1/2” tall. Please add $8.50 for insured U. S. postage. No damaged merchandise in 30 years read more
